Southampton Jiu Jitsu Club

Class Structure

Regular Jitsu -Beginners Always Welcome

Serious of self defence techniques

In a typical class, mixture of restraint, weapons, grappling, striking (pad work) and grab release techniques will be taught. The main focus of these sessions is self protection, although Sport Jitsu is covered as it is a great tool for fitness and enabling a student to practice their techniques in a competitive environment. The Self Defence techniques are taught in the manor of “anything goes” while using reasonable force and understanding your environment. For example the possibility of encountering a situation with any of the following: weapons, multiple attackers, etc. with the main aim to remove yourself from a problematic/dangerous engagement as soon as possible, minimising injuries to yourself, friends and/or family. The techniques are based from a martial arts system that obeys the principal that minimal force should produce maximum results, hence allowing a much weaker person to defeat/restrain a much stronger opponent.

Sport Jitsu - Beginners Always Welcome

Sport Jitsu, involves grappling (floor and standing), pad work and sparring, where only one opponent is considered and we fight/spar according to a set of agreed rules. Again the same principal is observed that we focus on increasing technical ability while also performing drills to increase fitness. Southampton Jitsu has competitions throughout the year, which include MMA, BJJA Nationals, Grappling, etc.

Open Mat Jitsu - Grades Only

As people have different goals and objectives for their martial art, Southampton Jiu Jitsu use this session for people to concentrate on what they want, whether being self defence, sparring (Mixed Martial Arts - MMA), grappling, syllabus for their next grading, or anything else martial art related. The session is only available for Grades as it is not structured, but a higher grade with the appropriate teaching credentials and insurance will always be present.

Mixed Martial Arts - MMA

This session involves lots of sparring, bringing together all the techniques taught in the other sessions.
